You can now raise money and create custom supporter communications through Text (SMS) messages.

  • Text to Give - Allow your supporters to contribute quickly over SMS and easily encourage monthly donations.

  • Text to Fundraise - Give your best fundraisers their own Text to Give code.  Every contribution received over text is logged against their fundraiser and is visible on their page.  For example: "Text 'JOSHS BDAY 50' to contribute $50 towards my fundraiser!"

  • Text to Pledge - Allow your supporters to pledge any amount of money towards a pledge campaign.  For example: "Text 'BUILD 500' to pledge $500 towards our building fund."

  • Text to Update Profile - Give your supporters easier access to their profile right from their phone.  For example: "Text 'MY PROFILE' to create, access or update your profile."

  • Text to Anything - Create custom replies and actions.  For example, "Text 'ITINERARY' to get a link to the event schedule!" or "Text 'GET THE BOOK' to purchase this limited time offer!"

  • All contributions are processed using Givecloud and are available to the supporter through the donor portal.

  • Connect all the functionality you love to messaging for one unified fundraising tool, including tax receipting, automated emails, CRM integrations, and more.

  • (1) phone number is included with your Givecloud account at no charge.  Each additional number is $19/mon.  There is no cost per message.  Our standard 1.25% transaction fee applies.


How It Works

For a supporter to contribute using Text to Give, they will need to have a supporter profile with a saved payment method and a verified phone number. They can do this by simply texting your Text to Give number using the keyword you have entered into the ‘Listening for’ field when setting up your conversations.

E.g. If a supporter does not have an existing profile and they text ‘give 25’, they will receive a reply asking them to create a profile with a link included. If they already have a profile but do not have a saved payment method, they will be prompted to add a payment method.

Any subsequent contributions made will not require this setup again. They will follow the flow of the video below.

NB: You can find your Text to Give number by logging in to the admin section (jpanel) of your website and heading to Features> Text to Give from the left menu. If you do not have a number, message our support team to request one.


Setting Up Your Phone Number

Request Your Number

You'll need to request a phone number be provisioned for your account.  You can do this through live chat.

You can choose either a toll-free (international) or a local number. If you expect international supporters to contribute using Text to Give, we suggest using a toll-free number. If you would like a local number, please include your area code when you request a phone number.

NB: If you are a UK-based organization that expects international contributions from +1 destinations (the US and Canada), please request an international number. Local UK numbers (+44) cannot receive SMS messages from countries with a leading +1 (the US and Canada).

Custom Phone Numbers (Vanity Numbers)

Custom (Vanity) Phone Numbers are expensive and in high demand. Depending on the length of the number, the customization and the region support, you can expect to pay an extra $10USD to $10,000USD per month... sometimes more. Please chat with our support team for more details.

Transferring Your Number

In some cases, we can transfer your Text to Give a number from another service provider. The process is at no cost but could require 2-3 weeks of migration time.


Understanding Conversations

A conversation starts with a supporter messaging you.  You can determine what the supporter needs to message and what the reply will be.

The very first time a supporter uses Text to Give, Givecloud will require the supporter have a profile with a valid payment method to proceed.

  • If Givecloud recognizes the supporter's phone number and that supporter has a valid payment method on file, Givecloud will link up the existing supporter and continue the conversation.

  • If Givecloud can't find a valid payment method for the existing supporter, they will be asked to fix their payment method through a secure link.

  • If Givecloud can't find an existing supporter, the supporter will be welcomed to Text to Give and asked to create their profile.


Setting Up Conversations

Text to Give

This will allow you to set up a basic "GIVE 50" (or GIVE {amount}) conversation.

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. Click the green + Add button at the top of the screen to start creating a conversation.

  3. Follow the on-screen form.  Under Conversation Type, select "Donation with Amount."  Under Listening For, enter the keywords you want your supporters to type.  For example: GIVE {amount} or DONATE {amount}. On the right panel, choose the item you want all contributions to be tracked against.  When your done, hit Save.

    Note: If you set up the conversation with a space between the Keyword and the Amount, the conversation will always require a space. To capture instances where people may text without a space (e.g. GIVE25), we recommend setting up a duplicate conversation without a space, e.g. GIVE{amount}.

Text to Give for Fundraising Pages (Peer-to-Peer)

Assign your peer-to-peer fundraisers their own Text to Give code for even faster fundraising!

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. Click the green + Add button at the top of the screen to start creating a conversation.

  3. Follow the on-screen form.  Under Conversation Type, select "Donation with Amount (towards a fundraising page)."  Under Listening For, enter the keywords you want your supporters to type.  For example: JOSH {amount} or SAMS BIRTHDAY {amount}. On the right panel, choose the Fundraising Page you want all contributions to be tracked against.  When you're done, hit Save.

Text to Pledge

This will allow you to set up a basic "PLEDGE 50" (or PLEDGE {amount}) conversation which will log a pledge to give an amount to a specific campaign. No payment is processed.

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. Click the green + Add button at the top of the screen to start creating a conversation.

  3. Follow the on-screen form.  Under Conversation Type, select "Pledge with Amount."  Under Listening For, enter the keywords you want your supporters to type.  For example: PLEDGE {amount} or BUILD {amount}. On the right panel, choose the pledge campaign you want all pledges to be tracked against.  When you're done, hit Save.

Text to Edit My Profile

Allow your supporters to access their profile directly from their phones without a username or password.  For example, "Text 'MY PROFILE' to access your profile from your phone!"

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. Click the green + Add button at the top of the screen to start creating a conversation.

  3. Follow the on-screen form.  Under Conversation Type, select "Send a Reply."  Under Listening For, enter the keywords you want your supporters to type.  For example, MY PROFILE. On the right panel, choose the message you want to reply to the supporter with.  Be sure to include the merge tag [[profile_link]] so that the supporter can click and access their profile.  For example: "Click below to access or create your profile! [[profile_link]]".  When you're done, hit Save.

Text to 'Anything' (Custom Replies)

You can create a custom conversation, and Givecloud will reply with any text you'd like.  For example, "Text 'ITINERARY' to get a link to the event schedule!" or "Text 'GET THE BOOK' to purchase this limited time offer!"

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. Click the green + Add button at the top of the screen to start creating a conversation.

  3. Follow the on-screen form.  Under Conversation Type, select "Send a Reply."  Under Listening For, enter the keywords you want your supporters to type.  For example, ITINERARY or GET THE BOOK. On the right panel, choose the message you want to reply to the supporter with and include any links you want the supporter to have access to—for example, a link to the event itinerary or a link to the book they can purchase. When you're done, hit Save.

If you want your subscribers to get a text to donate but still want them to go through your donation page, here is what you need to do:

1- Click to Features > Text to Give > Click on The "Add" button to create a new conversation or the magnifier icon beside an existing conversation.

2- Set the conversation type to "Send a reply", and under the "reply with" section, enter your message and the URL you want your supporter to click on to donate through. Click on the Save button and test your creation afterwards!

Testing Your Conversations

You can test your conversations using the Messaging console.

  1. From the left menu, click Features> Text to Give.

  2. From the bottom of the right panel, click "Messaging Console."

  3. Enter YOUR phone number (or the number of the supporter that you want to test - but beware, if you/they have a live payment method attached, it will be charged) at the bottom of the console. This is the number that the contribution is coming from.

  4. Enter a message and hit ENTER on your keyboard to start a conversation.
