PayPal Express Checkout as a sole Payment Processor

Here at Givecloud, we support PayPal Express Checkout. This means that your supporters can donate through their PayPal account.  If PayPal Express Checkout is the only payment gateway you enable, every supporter would be required to have a PayPal account to donate. Anyone without a PayPal account would need to create one before they donate.

For this reason, we recommend offering PayPal Express Checkout as an alternate payment option for supporters that have an existing PayPal account but not as your only payment processor.

For a list of other payment gateways we support, see here.

Important Requirement for New Recurring Payments

For Givecloud to process new recurring payments using PayPal, you must submit a support ticket directly to PayPal requesting that they enable 'Reference Transactions' on your account.

'Reference Transactions' allow Givecloud to create billing agreements between you and your supporters. Additional requirements enforced by PayPal may need to be met to enable this feature.

Connecting PayPal

  1. Go to Settings > Payment Gateway

  2. Click the Set up button next to PayPal Express Checkout.

  3. Click 'Connect PayPal' and follow the login instruction on PayPal's website.

  4. If you plan on accepting recurring payments, be sure you submit a support ticket directly with PayPal and have them enable 'Reference Transactions' on your account. Additional requirements enforced by PayPal may need to be met to enable this feature.

If you are getting errors while connecting your PayPal account or while testing the connection after your account is connected, it is likely because your PayPal account isn't verified or the bank account connected to your PayPal account isn't confirmed. You can follow these steps to verify your PayPal account and confirm your bank account.

All New One-Time Payments

All of the contributions made with PayPal will display in the same place as all your other contributions.  All payments will be included in your reports as well and in all your CRM integrations.

All New Recurring Payments

Givecloud will manage all new recurring payments received through the PayPal Express Checkout on your Givecloud account.  Givecloud will charge each PayPal account at the appropriate time.  This allows Givecloud to perform automated notifications, receipts and real-time CRM integrations.  It also allows your supporters to use their profile login on your Givecloud site to update their recurring payment, change their payment method from PayPal to another method, update their address, etc.
